Thursday 13

Thirteen Things LadyBug Is Thinking About Today

1. Last night was #1 Son and LLB's Winter Band Concert at school.

2. LLB had her first solo ever! She nailed it! She is a tiny little thing who gets huge sound out of her trumpet. The audience went wild when she finished... it was really cool! Needless to say, she was still glowing this morning.

3. #1 Son played a duet with a buddy. It was beautiful - #1 Son played alto sax and his buddy played tenor. They did a terrific job!

4. My middle school handbell group is playing outside on Saturday for the local Christmas festival. The kids are excited! The parents are game. Life is good!

5. One of the moms purchased Santa hats and elf hats for the kids. Wasn't that sweet??

6. The same mom is bringing cocoa and snacks for the kids when they are done ringing. She also got the school to purchase a banner for us to hang so everyone knows who these kids are and where they are from. I think this mom deserves a prize! She's terrific!

7. The electric company is trying to convince us to put up 15 story high voltage lines right through our rural community so they can sell power to NY. Umm... NO. Not interested, thankyouverymuch.

8. The lines would be about 5000 feet from my house. That sounds like a long way until you realize that a mile is 5280 feet. Now I'm really not interested.

9. I am so NOT into these power lines that I actually put a sign up on my property next to the street. I never ever put signs up for anything - ever. Mr. Bug is so NOT into it that he put a bumper sticker on his car. This is big, people. This is very big.

10. I hope to finish my Christmas cards today as well as addressing the invitations to our Open House. Wanna come? Let me know and I'll put you on the list!

11. I think I may start some present wrapping soon... I have to sort my loot and check on the paper/ribbon/bow/tape situation before I begin.

12. I also have to make a bazillion pizelles. I'm giving those as gifts this year... Any ideas on how I should wrap them to avoid breakage?

13. The Grandbugs are starting out on their voyage to Northern VA on Monday. Pray for no snow!

Tree Time

The tree is up. It is decorated. It is done. It is ready for Mr. Bug's train and some gifts.

It only took two days to get all the ornaments on the tree. We even left a few of the more hideous off. I can't find two of my favorites, though... I had two glass bubbles - they looked just like soap bubbles floating in the tree.

The lights... oh my... I used to string 1500 clear lights onto my tree every year. It was gorgeous once I got it done, but it was a long and lonely job. Fortunately, this is a pre-lit tree so I didn't have to spend another whole day stringing lights. Last year the Grandbugs gave us QVC dollars for our anniversary and we cashed them in for this stunning tree. It even has a remote control for the lights. No more climbing under the tree for the switch, plug, or whatever. I highly recommend it!

So now I'm thinking about ornament storage. I need something better. I need something where I can store the ornaments so that I can hang them more efficiently. I need to be able to store the heavier ornaments - the ones that go inside - so that I can get to them first. Then I need to be able to get to the wooden/not so fragile for the bottom of the tree and finally I need to access the fragile and more decorative ornaments for the upper 2/3 of the tree. Any ideas? Please remember that all of this needs to be lifted up (and down) the rickety pull-down attic stairs. I want it all... I know this...

The Devil is Up For Grabs

The Devil Wears Prada is once again ready to circulate. You remember that it went from Hawaii, to Renee, to me. I finished it and Wow! - what a great book. If you want it, let me know in comments and I'll have LLB pick from a hat on Monday afternoon. It will ship out on Tuesday.

It's a fast and funny read! Don't miss it, people!

I wasn't supposed to, but I went shopping yesterday. Yes, I braved the crowds and came out relatively intact.

I found some real bargains at Bath & Body Works - I even used a coupon. Did you know that they discontinued the Wall Flowers Juniper Breeze? Well, now you do. Did you know that you get a coupon for every purchase? I happen to have 2 burning a hole in my pocket. I think I need to go back next week to spend 'em....

We hit Walmart. The crowds weren't too bad. I got a few things there and got out fast. I actually picked up a video game for one of the kids while I was there. I saw an employee and asked if he had the game. He got it, brought me to the register, and I was checked out in approximately 2 min. LOVE THAT!

Kohls... Hmm... Well - it was CROWDED! You definitely need two people and cell phones to shop in a timely manner. Mr. Bug went to the mens' room and discovered that you can check out at customer service. The lines for the regular registers were snaking throughout the store... He called me to inform me of this priceless little detail and then promptly got in line while I continued to shop. He called me again when he was 2 people from the register. I could have shopped a little longer, but... Since I only went in for a couple of things, it was okay. I picked up a real bargain - a white button down shirt for LLB's band concert on Wed. for $8. We were out of there in record time!

I even convinced Mr. Bug to hit AC Moore with me. We shuffled through there and picked up the kids' Gingerbread House that they make every year for $6. Then I found a pine garland for $3. I'll use that for the advent wreath at church. I know "they" want real pine garland, but let's think about this... The real stuff is extremely flammable, it dries in a NY min., and it sheds mercilessly. The fake can be used year after year and has no issues. If "they" don't like my garland, "they" can do it themselves, right?

So, we left the house shortly after 10am and were back chowing down on leftovers by 2:15. I'd say we had a successful shopping excursion.

I was going to set up our tree yesterday, but I had to finish a birthday gift for one of LLB's friends. The party is today... I could not procrastinate any longer. Needless to say, the gift is done along with another project I had going. The tree will go up today. I'll post a picture once it has been properly primped.

1. Mr. Bug - He's the sweetest husband - did I mention that he cooks?

2. The children - They work hard, try their best, and are just all around great kids.

3. The Grandbugs - I'm still amazed that they are willing to move here to be with us... then again... it might be the warmer climate and not us. Hmm...

4. Our home - It's warm, cozy, in the middle of nowhere and we love it.

5. Friends - No explanation needed

6. Zebbie and the cats - I may need to rethink this one... they only love us because we feed them... Kidding!!!

7. Our jobs - They allow us all the comforts of home.

8. Our children's teachers - They educate our kids and prepare them for the future...

9. Food - refer to #1

10. Firewood - The fire is crackling. Come on by and have a cup of tea and chat for a while.

11. Medicine - I'm finally starting to get better...

A Wordy Wordless Wednesday

I have one picture to post - it's not very exciting... But, I do have a bunch of stuff to tell you!

My BIL and his girl arrived on Monday night. They had a smooth and uneventful drive from the Great White North and found our house - no sweat.

Yesterday morning LLB and I went to the private school where I work for a handbell concert. The kids did a terrific job. Unfortunately, everyone talked through their performance because they were "the prelude". The kids were pretty miffed and I really didn't blame them. I told them that they performed beautifully and it really didn't matter because the important people - their parents and grandparents - listened. I took off to drop LLB at her school and then returned to clean up the 1000 lbs of equipment.

When I was finished, I met up with Mr. Bug and the rest of the crew. We went to a "local" pub for lunch. (Mr. Bug had a gift certificate burning a hole in his pocket.) We sat right next to a toasty warm fire. To start, we had some fried calamare and a seafood newburgh soup that was to die for. I moved from the soup right into a lobster club - that was yummy, too. I skipped the dessert but the rest of them had a lovely chocolate cake that LLB would have killed for.

After lunch we went home - I was stuffed and ready for an afternoon on the couch with Dr. Phil. Mr. Bug mentioned that the gutters had leaves in them and that they really needed to be done this weekend. I thought we'd do them on Friday after our guests left. Alas, they decided to help us clean out the gutters right then. It was a gorgeous day and they wanted to move around. Mr. Bug doesn't do heights, so he was thrilled to get some help. I've reserved the guest room for them for this same week next year. (The only payment they require is a warm bed and decent food. We can do that, huh Grambug?)

Today we are hanging close to home -- I think -- Things change at a moment's notice around here. Tomorrow we are off to the Smithsonian. Yes, I know that tomorrow is Thanksgiving Day and we should be home stuffing ourselves silly, but we aren't that kind of family. We are going to get some DC touring done along with a little learnin' before we eat. We will come home and stuff ourselves full of Beer Can Chicken and stuffing.

So, I'll leave you with a picture of my sweet LLB ringing handbells at the festival...

Have a Happy Thanksgiving - In case I don't get to post tomorrow...

Ding Dong

Well - I survived the weekend!

The kids and parents all had a marvelous time at the AGEHR Area III Handbell Festival in Richmond. They rang their little hands off, made some friends, and experienced one of the best conductors I've ever seen. The parents settled down and the kids were just terrific!

Will I do it next year? Of course I will...

LLB attended the festival with me (even though she doesn't go to school with those kids). This morning my sweet LLB - as she sat like an exhausted lump in front of her waffle - said, "I just love ringing handbells." Now that, my friends, is why I do all this... That one little sentence makes it all worth while...

Thursday 13

Thirteen Things LadyBug Is Thinking About Today

1. I just got back from a field trip to the Kennedy Center to see Madam Butterfly.

2. I have to get LLB to Ballet and me to bells by 6:30pm

3. LLB and I both have strep throat. I got new medicine yesterday...

4. #1 Son tried out for basketball this week. He didn't make the team.

5. We aren't too heartbroken about it because we have a lot of things going and this would have put us over the edge...

6. Tomorrow is the handbell festival in Richmond.

7. I'm not even ready to be packed.

8. Do you have any idea how much equipment I have to move tomorrow?

9. Can you say tons of equipment? It's all heavy. Nothing is light...

10. I have one parent who backed out of the festival trip on Monday. Then she decided that she wanted her child in with another mom who already had a full room. I got adjoining rooms and put some other responsible girls in with her child. The mother isn't happy. She wants the child to have a room all to herself. Not happening! She seems to think that her $40 room fee covers the cost of the room. HAH!! That's pretty funny...

11. I have to share my room with LLB. The parents want to know how come I don't have more kids in my room. I don't count as a chaperone. I'm the teacher. The teacher who isn't getting paid to go on this trip. The teacher who has strep who should be staying home. The teacher who foolishly thought that these parents would be more thankful that I'm giving their kids this opportunity.

12. Will I go next year? Probably...

13. Why? Selective amnesia.

Bed Time

Mr. Bug and I have purchased our 17 year anniversary present. You know we are hopeless romantics who only buy the most impractical gifts, right? Ha! Oh - yeah, that's not us...

This year is similar to the previous 16. Practicality rules. We needed a new mattress set. We shopped - it was almost worse than shopping for a car except that you only keep a car for 10 years - you keep your mattress for 20, right? We finally settled on the firmest Simmons you can buy. It arrived today.

OMG! Mattresses have certainly changed quite a bit since our last set. Our old mattress set was about 12 inches in height - yup both pieces. One certainly didn't have worry about the distance to the floor if one fell out of bed. I'm not saying we had a crappy mattress set. I'm just saying that it was pretty flat.

Those days are over, baby!

This mattress and box spring is high! I need a ladder to get into the bed now! It's so high I was afraid I'd get a nosebleed or suffer altitude sickness once I got up there. Remember those railings that we had for the kids so that they wouldn't fall out? I think I need to dig a set of those out of the attic... That first step on the way to the bathroom in the middle of the night is going to be a doozy!

I was sitting up on the bed enjoying the view when I looked up. I don't know why I did, but the ceiling is a whole lot closer than it used to be. There will be no jumping on the bed - not unless one wants to go to the ER with a concussion.

Monday Memories

Monday Memories: Did I ever tell you About My Lost Present?

Denise over at Mental Excrements is having a tough time getting a package from UPS. It reminded me of my little issue with the US Post Office.

Last year, around this time, Grambug sent me a package via media mail. She told me to look for it. She said she sent it early so that I could enjoy it while I got ready for the Christmas Invasion. (My mommy loves me.)

Well, I got really busy with buying and wrapping and all the millions of boxes that my family was sending in - Christmas was here last year and I didn't have the space then that I have now. I was stashing boxes and piling presents faster than the elves up at the North Pole. I forgot about that package and so did she.

One day in late January I got a package. In it was a Spanish History Textbook written in Spanish. I looked to see who sent it and the return address was Grambug's. I knew something wasn't quite right, so I called her and asked her why she sent me a Spanish textbook. We laughed for a minute and then she said, "Did you ever get that book I sent you?" I sent it in the box it came in and I changed the shipping label. Well... That's when I knew that I'd been scammed by the USPS.

I flew down to the Post Office. The lady felt terrible for me, and I assured her that I knew she didn't take my book. The textbook came from a DC College. A very nice DC institution... GW in fact. I was sure that my present had been scarfed in DC at the big sorting center there. The Mail Lady told me to fill out all these papers and they would see about getting my book or some restitution.

Months later I got a call from the Post Office. Because Grambug had sent my BOOK via MEDIA MAIL, I could not get any $ back for it. Some schmo stole my present and I get nothing! She sent the book via media mail because that's how you are supposed to send books.

So, my book and booklight - wrapped in blue snowman paper - went to someone else for Christmas.

A word to the wise - don't use media mail...

Meetings...

Today is Sunday. I am a stay at home mom with a 2 hour per week job. I don't like meetings. I don't do meetings - especially on Sunday. I have 2 meetings today.

This afternoon - right after coffee hour - we have our church's annual meeting. Last year I snuck out. This year I cannot. I have been nominated to be on our church's vestry. I guess that means that they like me - or not. They have to vote me in... I'm not sure if I want to be voted in, but they need 3 people to run and that's all they have listed on the ballot... so, I guess I'm a shoe in. When they asked me to run for the vestry, I asked them why they would want me. I don't usually say much. Their answer was a good one, "You aren't afraid to say no and speak your mind." Okay... That's true...

Then, later on, we have our HOA meeting. This one should be fun! It's usually quick - we go over our expenditures, discuss a few items, and then we are free to eat. It's all about the food...

I'm Back!

Hello!
Thanks for all of your get well wishes. I do live and breathe - I'm still coughing, but not as much. My medicine is working and I'm finally starting to feel myself. The medicine has one side effect - it makes me tired - I mean really tired as in dopey. I would rather it made me zippy so I could get my chores done.

LLB is having a banner weekend! She is finally big enough to ride her new bike - umm... yes, that would be the wicked cool purple one we purchased for her two years ago... LLB rode the bike all afternoon on Friday and then she got up this morning to get some riding in before breakfast. I'd say she loves it! She doesn't ride on the street. She rides all over the yard. She might get eaten by the bear, but at least she's not going to get hit by a car.

Right now she's watching her favorite movie - Phantom of the Opera. She's curled up on the couch with Zebbie and her cat. I love to watch her watch this movie...

An "A" Kind of Day!

So, I can't talk. I have no voice. Just call my squeeky.
My kids are happy to have a mom who can't talk...

I go to the doctor. Guess what it is...
Bronchitis? Um... no.
I thought for sure I had bronchitis. My chest is sore. I'm caughing. I'm tired - really tired.
"Ladybug", she said, "you have rip roaring strep."
"Huh? I don't have white patches on my tonsils. I just can't talk."
"The rapid strep test we did lit up like a Christmas tree."
"Really? That's good, I guess..."
"Ladybug, did you have nausea?"
"No."
"Loose stool?"
"No."
"Sore throat?"
"A little, but I thought it was from coughing"
"You poor sweet thing!"
"Once again, I don't present a classic case."
"You never present a classic case, Ladybug. Take these pills twice a day and you'll feel better real soon."
I got pretty blue pills... I read the side effects - They make you poop your brains out. Cool - blue poo... that could be fun. I'll keep you posted.

It was report card day today. It was an A kind of day!
Everyone was pleased! That long line of A's down the page always makes them - and me - so happy.

Lets hope they keep it up until they graduate. I'm lookin' for a college scholarship for these kids. :-)

The Ladybug is Out

Ladybug caught something nasty...

Ladybug will be back sometime later this week...

I'll be reading when I can.

Saturday Summary

I know that today is Sunday, but I thought I'd fill you in on my day yesterday.

I got up early and posted my blog article - complete with pictures! I had a cup of coffee with Mr. Bug while I did that.

Mr. Bug got #1 Son up and they went off to church for breakfast and the yard clean up. LLB came down. We fed Zebbie and Pumpernickel. Then we had our breakfast - I made us some yummy waffles. Oh - yes, I fed the fire as well.

We ran upstairs and got dressed so we could run off to get #1 Son around 10. They both have Jazz class on Saturdays at 10:30. In the mean time, Mr. Bug called and requested some ibuprofen for a sore arm. (He got his flu shot yesterday and we all know how much they can ache especially when one is raking leaves.) I brought him an appropriately large dose and a blottle of water in exchange for one handsome boy.
We arrived at the dance studio where I work and the children dance. I posted at least 30 payments, cleaned up the desk, hung some new signs and composed a letter for those individuals who didn't pay their bill. Don't people realize that if they don't pay their bills, we can't pay the studio rent??

We left at 12:15 and headed off to our favorite local fast food establishment - Mr. Bug had placed an emergency call to me - he was starving at the church and needed a non-nutritional tummy filling supplement. I obliged and filled our tummies, too. We arrived at the church with a couple extra burgers and fries (the eating establishment gave us a couple extras - somone's guardian angel was working over time!!) The guys were happy to share the extras and I headed home with the children.

LLB had to be back at dance at 3 for Nutcracker rehearsal. #1 Son played his sax while LLB took some quiet time in her room. She likes to go up there and play with her tiny toys - you know the ones you step on in the middle of the night.. yup, those. I cleaned up the kitchen and started on my Christmas cards. When I left with LLB at 2:45, #1 was starting to study for his Spanish quiz and his Math exam. I don't know if he continued to study or played his video games... I'd like to think he studied. His test grade will give us the answer...

I dropped LLB and ran off to meet Mr. Bug and the guys at their other favorite burger place that serves ice cold frosty beer. (I had a soda - only because I had to go back to the studio and post more payments.) The guys told us all about their mission trip to New Orleans. It was fascinating! I can't wait to see their slide show today.

At 4:30 I ran back to the dance studio and worked until LLB was finished. I think I got back in the car to come home at 6:21. LLB and I called home from the car and put in our dinner order with Mr. Bug. LLB wanted pasta. I'm always up for pasta!! My sweet Mr. had it almost done when we walked in the door. It was yummy, by the way.
I did some more cards while I chatted with Mr. Bug and the kids. Around 8, I plopped down on the couch with my kids. We watched a little TV - well, they watched and I attempted to crochet, but I actually checked my eyelids for leaks while my crochet project rested neatly in my lap. It's not a very productive way to crochet...

At 9, I tucked Zebbie in for the night and then I went upstairs to tuck my kids into their warm snuggly beds. At 9:45, I was out cold in mine.

Any questions?

Lunching with The Ladies

I went to lunch with some fellow bloggers yesterday!I met Beckie, Flip Flop, Lazy Daisy, and Melli!
They are not axe murderers - as some husbands and sons might think...

We laughed, we chatted like the old friends that we are, and had a marvelous time. We shared pictures - LLB actually has a head! Imagine that?! We shared stories. We laughed. We ate. We chatted it up - oh my! We sure did chat it up! Melli is a scream! She's funny, witty, and she can talk about anything. I wish Flip Flop lived closer... She and I had a ton in common. We scrap, we crochet - we just generally clicked. And I totally clicked with Daisy and Beckie, too. They live a little bit closer. I'm sure we will be lunching again!! I told them all that next time, they can lunch here at The Crossing. It's almost exactly half way for Melli and Daisy & Beckie. I'm sure I can convince Mr. Bug to serve up a gastronomic feast!

We had a super long lunch. Sadly, I had to leave earlier than the others to run an errand and get back in time to chaperone the Sadie Hawkins Dance. I had to support #1 Son's National Jr. Honor Society as well as make sure that LLB and HP were having fun and getting their pizza - the biggest slices possible. (I'm a good mom!!)

I'm sure you all want to know how LLB and HP did. They palled around for the whole dance. They danced some fast dances. They ate pizza. They drank some soda. They chatted a lot. LLB said she had a great time and that HP is a terrific guy. I'd say it was a very successful dance.

I know that today is Scavenger Hunt Saturday. The Ladies were all telling me that today's subject is Windows. Here is a picture I took on the way to lunch out my car window. (Yes, that is bug goo on the windshield.)

Blog Fodder

This ever happen to you?

You come home after having been gone for 2.5 hours. You usually arrive home around this time on Thursdays...
The garage door goes up, the light comes on, you drive in, the door goes down. The light stays on.
You see the other overhead garage lights come on. The door to the house opens.
Your significant other comes through the door and takes 3 steps. He appears to be oblivious to your presence.

Your car is a giant white beacon filling space.
Your daughter opens her door to get out. A small Click sounds as the door pops open.
Your significant other jumps a mile. His arms flail. He screams like a girl.
It seems he didn't know you were back.
Yes, folks... this is what we call -- Blog Fodder!

Thursday 13

Thirteen Things LadyBug Is Thinking About Today

1. Tomorrow I'm off to have lunch with some blogging friends. I'll fill you in then.

2. I have to make 72 pizelles today... It seems we are supposed to be thanking our teachers by feeding them and making them fat. I have to deliver them to school tomorrow. At least these cookies are light!

3. I am finishing up my children's Christmas gift shopping today. It's easy when all they want is electronics. I could wait to see if there will be sales, but I just want it done and out of the way -- AND I don't want to worry about not getting exactly what they want...

4. I have to chaperone the Sadie Hawkins dance tomorrow. I'm hoping for lots of blog fodder!

5. I called DirecTV this morning to change the checking account numbers (because my bank got eaten up by another bank) and they told me that their system that does that is unavailable today. I'll have to do that tomorrow. Technology is supposed to make my life easier... why is this so hard??

6. I am getting ready for the Handbell Festival in a couple of weeks. I have some really super parents helping me this year. One is a Ret. Lt. General. He's into organization. I LOVE this guy!! He's got everything down and will have those kids in line and ready to go!

7. I got a new handbell piece for my kids called Wizards in Winter. It was originally performed by the Trans Siberian Orchestra. Here is the video that inspired the handbell piece:

8. If you want to hear the handbell piece, you can go to Here and click the button. It's awesome! My kids absolutely love it!!

9. It's almost time for the children to come down to breakfast... We are having waffles or french toast. Want some? I've got plenty.

10. LLB's private trumpet lessons are going really well. She is going to be playing a solo at the Winter Concert.

11. Both children got a part in the school play. She's in a commercial. He's the Big Bad Wolf. What does this mean? I have no idea.

12. The play is on the same night at the Jazz Revue. Of course it is. So, we will be running from one performance venue to the next. They don't need to eat, do they?

13. If you want to see my cherubs in the Nutcracker, let me know. I can reserve tickets for you...

Perfect Post

My appologies for posting this so late.

I have chosen I Wasn't Always Like This to receive my Perfect Post award this month. My favorite post was hard to choose, but I think I've finally settled on the one called I Came, I Saw, I Choked. This girl is reallly funny, witty, and she's one of the few who can make me spew coffee out my nose! Whenever I visit, I know I'm going to laugh, cry, and feel a part of her family. So, pop on over and give her some love!

If you want to read more Perfect Posts, hop on over to Petroville or Suburban Turmoil. You'll have lots to choose from!!

Wordless Wednesday

This week we had too many cool things to photograph. I couldn't choose just one picture..

I went to a Tombstone Tea yesterday. My friend J is really into Halloween. She even decorated the bloody marys. We had munchies, cider, and games out in her "Graveyard". I had such a wonderful time -- almost made me want to do one next year. Almost -- but not quite.

I took this last week - through the window. The deer were right there - just up the hill a little bit. I've got to have Mr. Bug take down our badminton net - it's getting in the way of my pictures.

I went up to LLB's bedroom with a stack of laundry and found our sweet Angel curled up in the doll bed. I couldn't resist snapping a quick picture of her. I only got this one. She simply hates to be photographed.
