Sunday Snicker

We were sitting around the dining room table yacking it up with the family when the subject of my sister and her husband came up. They are here for a conference and their hotel is about an hour from us. Someone said something like "it's too bad they can't stay out here with us". #1 Son said, "They don't want to stay with us, they're nudie weds..." Freudian slip??

The cedar? It's for a pergola that goes out on the Grandbugs west-end deck right out side the living room doors.

Saturday Summary

Ok
I have 10 minutes to fill you all in on the goings-on here at The Crossing. It has been a very busy and productive week construction-wise...
We have window sills. We have baseboard. We have window and door trim.

We have bathroom floor tiles and some wall tile.

Most of the interior doors have been installed and these are all that are left. The big one over there behind the ladders connects the addition to the existing house. That is supposedly going to be installed on Monday.

See this stack of red cedar?

What do you think it is going to be? I'll give you a hint - the boxes in the background contain columns and the trims that go with.

#1 Son has been busy at basketball camp all week. He enjoyed himself immensely and walked away with a wicked cool basketball.

The children are off to band camp next week. They are both thrilled to be going. #1 Son enjoys basketball, but he's really good at saxophone. So, this week will be his week to shine. LLB is ready to play her trumpet for a week... She has been practicing and is playing beautifully.

Have a great weekend!

Wordless Wednesday

Pumpernickel

LLB's beloved Dottie has gone to heaven. She hadn't been well for quite some time, so her passing was not unexpected. Pumpernickel has taken her place in the cage, but not in LLB's heart. Fortunately, LLB has a very big heart and can love this sweet pig, too.

Monday Memories

Monday Memories: Did I ever tell you About Ballet This Weekend?

LLB had a ballet performance this weekend. Her studio doesn't do recitals. They do a full length ballet. Her teacher believes that if children are taking ballet, they should learn the stories and the music. I happen to agree, as this makes for a very well rounded student and the performances are far more entertaining.

This time it was Coppelia. LLB was terrific - if I do say so myself! She was relaxed. She smiled. She was graceful. I was amazed! Heck, her brother was amazed - he even leaned over and said to me, "Wow, Mom, she's good!"

Her favorite piece is called Prayer - I'm sure it has an Italian or French name, but the program is over with my scrapping stuff and I'm too lazy to go find it across the room. Anyway, the Prayer costume was a long, soft, white dress. LBB's comment was: I feel like I'm a cloud when I dance in this dress... I feel like I'm floating... ah... I love this... And off she dances. It was obvious how much she loved that piece by the way she danced it. She really did almost float...

There is one thing that most people don't realize. LLB doesn't "DO" little kids. If they are visiting at our house, she'll suck it up and deal. If she's at someone else's house and they have a younger sibling, she's fine. But given her druthers, she'd rather stick pins in her eyes than put up with anyone under the age of 4. That said, her ballet teacher decided to make her (and 3 other of the older girls who actually like little kids - probably because they all have younger siblings) help the tiny ballerinas on stage. We compare this exercise in futility to hearding cats. Tiny ballerinas are adorable, but they really don't have clue. They get out on stage in their costumes and all (okay all 5) of the dance steps they have learned exit their brains stage left. They stand there mesmorized - like deer in the headlights. They try to find their moms (who are all seated in the front rows like paparazzi). They wave. They really are quite cute... LLB tried desperately to get them to do what they had learned. She took her charges by the hand and led them around. She lined them up. She did the steps. It was the longest 2 minutes of her life! She survived.

The french braids - I suppose you want to know about those. Okay. I tried. I can't do french braids. I need lessons. I gave up and took her to the hair dresser on Friday. Then we sprayed them with hairspray - a ton of hairspray. Her hair was so stiff, you could knock on it and get sound. She slept in her braids on Friday night. We sprayed the whispy ends down on Saturday morning. She looked pretty darned good! One of the older girls re-did them for her for the Saturday night performance. I am going to practice this year, so that next time she needs french braids, I'm all set. :-)

And the beat goes on...

We have garage doors! I can't drop them down to take a picture because we have no power to get them back up...
Check out the clicker!! Can't get lost if you hang them from the door release...

They installed the back porch posts and decking. We still need a little more siding over there, too...

They sunk the propane tank - this is all I can see - a lovely green dome.

They installed the front porch posts and some of the decking. Doesn't it look great?!

They installed some of the decking on the back deck.

Oh - and my A/C is working. It had a defective fan which the A/C guy replaced. We are cool. We are happy...

What's up for today? Hmm... well, I'm going to spend the day picking up my house, doing laundry, and reading up on how to do french braids. Once I have studied the art of french braiding, I am going to successfully french braid LLB's hair for her performance this evening. How's that for the power of positive thinking?!

Thirteen Things LadyBug Is Thinking About Today

1. I have a mountain of laundry to do today. It is not even 5:15am and I've already done one load...

2. The Grandbugs are due to arrive Monday.

3. They are going to start the floors on Monday. The guest room floor is being done when all the rest of the floors are going in... Of course it is...

4. The Grandbugs will lose their "bedroom" and their bed will be moved to the formal living room. There's nothing like putting your parents on display...

5. My brand new A/C unit is pumping out hot air. They are coming to figure out why this morning. I darned well better have cold air pumping out of that thing by this evening or I'm not going to be very happy.

6. Yesterday was the last day of school! The children are asleep in their beds and they can stay there as long as they want today. Tomorrow is another story, but today they may sleep. (Tomorrow, we have chores!)

7. LLB walked away with a few awards at yesterday's 5th grade graduation. #1 Son cleaned up over at the Middle School. It was a good day for the kids at The Crossing.

8. I hope they start my deck today. I really could use it while the Grandbugs are here...

9. I entered a scrapbooking competition for the summer. I have to get 30 pages done. I need to catch up. I think I have at least 30 pages to do!! The person who completes the most pages gets a prize. You know me - I love prizes!!

10. LLB's ballet performances are this weekend. It's a full length ballet. Want to see it? I've got a connection for tickets...

11. I am reading a book called "The Book Thief". Get it! Read it! It is a young adult book, but it is really really good.

12. The children are off to Band Camp in a couple of weeks. LLB is going to be playing her trumpet! She's so excited. #1 Son is not as excited to have his younger sister join him at this Middle School camp... Alas, he will have to adjust!

13. If you were a kid, say a 13 year old boy, and you could go to a boring meeting with mom or stay home and clean up the house for company, which would you choose?

Marmalade's Adventure

This is Marmalade.

When I was serving breakfast yesterday morning, I realized I wasn't being serenaded with the normal incessant meow. I called. "Marmalade! Breakfast!"
Nothing. No cat.
I called again.
This cat has never ever missed breakfast.
Hmm... Where could he be?
LLB mentioned that he didn't sleep on her bed during the night.
I remembered seeing him go out the evening before, but I didn't remember seeing him come in.

I looked out the window.
It was pouring rain.
Oh dear... my poor sweet toothless, clawless cat - outside... defenseless... wet... traumatized...

I opened the door and called.
No cat in his right mind is going to run through the rain if he's in a nice dry place. I know that. I figured he had to be in the addition.

I didn't have time to worry about him, so I continued on with my frantic morning routine. Although, I have to admit, I did keep looking out the windows to look for him.

I popped the garage door open and gave one more call.
The drywallers came over and asked if I was looking for a big old orange cat.
"Yes, have you seen him?"
"Well, he was upstairs. He was chasing a bird. He caught 'im, too."
I was flabbergasted!
I said, "Huh?! He has no teeth and no claws!"
"Well, the bird was pretty weak. We took the bird out of the cat's mouth. He was gonna kill 'im an' eat 'im."
My thought - what was he going to do, gum him to death??
"Wow. Really? The cat has no teeth!!"
"He's a good hunter, that one. He caught that there bird."
"Hmm... Wow! He caught a bird... go figure."

At that point I got into my car still shaking my head in disbelief.
Upon my return - many hours later, I checked the house and did a few chores - no cat.
I went out to move the remnants of our wood pile so the guys can dig for the new electrical service and who comes trotting out of the woods?
Mr. Marmalade.
He almost swaggered - okay he did swagger.
As he walked across the driveway was saying, "I'm tough. I'm smart. I still got it! Check me out, Mom!"
I asked him if he was hungry.
I was assuming he was, since the drywallers had taken his all natural breakfast right out of his mouth.
He made a bee-line for the kitchen.
When I asked him what flavor cat food he wanted, he said he didn't care. Anything edible would be fine. (He knows about my cooking!!) I gave him mixed grill in the orange can - nothing but the best for my cat!

While he ate, he told me all about the cold night spent in the addition without any fluffy blankets or a sweet LLB to keep him warm.
He told me how he caught the bird - his stealth, his prowess, his skill.
(I told him I thought he was just lucky. He was not impressed.)
He mentioned a jaunt in the woods to see if he could find a lady cat to impress. He was not successful in that venue either.

Last night at bed time, I leaned over to kiss LLB goodnight. There, curled up next to her, was Mr. Marmalade. It seems he's not so tough after all...

Monday Memories

Monday Memories: Did I ever tell you About Canoeing With Mr. Bug?

A long time ago, Mr. Bug invited me to go on a canoe trip down the Ipswich River with some friends. It would be just a short jaunt on a beautiful fall day and then we'd go to get something to eat. Scenery, activity, and food -- oh yeah, and a cute guy -- I was so there!

I need to give you a little background here. My mom and dad made sure I could survive in the wild - I can start a fire with two sticks, I can make a shelter in the woods,I can tie knots, I know first aid, I can paddle a canoe. My Girl Scout troop was an adventurous one - we camped in the snow, we went biking on Cape Cod... we did it all. Our troop did a 5 day canoe trip in Maine. (I trained for that one, but I think we went on family vacation that week, so I couldn't go.)

Mr. Bug's outdoor experience was a little different. He can run fast. He can ski very well. He's a terrific tennis player. He can play baseball. He can do jaccuzzi laps while sipping a martini better than anyone I know.

Do you get the picture?? We've always said that together we make one well-rounded person.

We arrive at the top of the river. I ask Mr. Bug where he wants to sit in the canoe. Mr. Bug says, "I've never been in a canoe. I'll take the back." You steer from the back of the canoe. I told him that since he's never been in a canoe, maybe he should let me drive until he gets used to it. He agrees. (I silently say a prayer of thanks and muffle a thankful sigh.)

We start down the river. Mr. Bug is loving it! He understands how to paddle and is doing very well - in.the.front.

We float down the river. We laugh with our friends. We are having a great time. We stop about 1/2 way down and have a snack under the trees. It is lovely.

When we go to get back into the canoes, Mr. Bug says, "I'd like to try to drive. I think I can do it." I agree, but I have my doubts. We start off. We head across the river and promptly hit a rock. I try not to laugh. I tell him. "It's okay. You're just getting started."

Mr. Bug gets us out of that jam and we head back across the river and hit a fallen tree. Now it's funny! We do this over and over until Mr. Bug realizes that everyone else is floating DOWN the river and we keep going ACROSS it.

Fortunately, he decides to let me drive the last little bit. There is a small waterfall at the docking station. If you miss the docking station, you go over the falls. I was really glad I was driving at the end.

Fast forward 18 years...
Mr. Bug and #1 Son are canoeing at the state park this weekend. #1 Son is in the back to start. Life is good. They are doing great! They go all over the lake. They are a finely tuned machine.

They swap places. Mr. Bug is in the driver's seat. He's doing great! He steers! He paddles! All my lessons have paid off! They float into the dock. #1 Son ties the canoe to the dock and gets out. They take out the cooler. They have done it!

Wait!
Mr. Bug is getting out of the canoe.
He makes his way forward.
All he has to do is put his foot on the dock.
SPLASH!
Oh no! What happened?! Mr. Bug is in the water!
Poor Mr. Bug! His foot slipped. (It really was quite funny!)

We'll have to go back and try again - this time, we'll bring a change of clothes for everyone...

Retainer Blues....

#1 Son broke the first retainer a while back.
This morning, exactly 3 days after getting the new one, he can't find it. Why it isn't in his mouth, I don't know. I.am.not.happy.
This child is going to be working for me all summer long. He will be mowing. He will be doing dishes. He will be folding laundry.
Ahh.. the sweet scent of child labor...
LBC

UPDATE: Retainer FOUND!! Mr. Bug and #1 Son returned to the State Park we were at yesterday. They rifled through the trash and...Tah Dah!! There it was. Wrapped up in the meatball sub wrapper.

#1 Son has learned a very valuable lesson - EAT with the retainer IN the mouth.

What Not to Wear

I live in the middle of nowhere. I have very few window treatments. As you drive up the driveway, if you were to look into the family room windows, you can see me typing away at my computer. I am exposed to the world - so to speak. I was sitting at my computer yesterday morning - it must have been about 6:45. I was wearing my pajamas - a t-shirt and my skivvies. Suddenly I heard some tapping on the walls in the addition. "OMG!", I thought... "People are here working!! I am not dressed!" Needless to say, I booked it to the privacy of my master suite and got showered and dressed.

This morning - Saturday 6:45am - I was sitting at my computer in basically the same outfit. I was just wondering if anyone would show up to work here today... And, yes, once again... I heard some tapping. I'm certainly getting my early morning run in - up the stairs to change!! I figure I've got three choices a) get dressed before I come down in the morning, b) get some window treatments or c) charge a fee to everyone who comes up the driveway before 7:30am. I'm thinking the fee will be far more lucrative...

A little bit o' nothin...

Ok - Let me catch you up on life here at the Crossing.

I had my hip appointment yesterday. I arrived at 12:15 - a little early for my 12:40 appointment, but the traffic was light and I sailed right in. I checked in at the desk and the girl says, "Your appointment is for 1pm."
I said, "My appointment card says 12:40".
She says, "Well, your appointment is for 1."
I pull out my card and say, "I'm not making a stink, but here is my card and it says 12:40."
She says, "If the doctor comes back from lunch early, maybe he will agree to take you early."
I say, "My appointment is at 12:40. I'd be very happy if he took me sooner." I smile sweetly.
(I'm such a witch... um I mean... b****)
The take me in at 12:45.
The doc looks at me. Checks a bunch of stuff and tells me I'm not a classic case for anything. No surprise there! He tells me I need an MRI.
So - that's my next step - an MRI.
I'll keep you posted...

Two guys delivered the propane tank for the Grandbug's house yesterday. It looks like a green submarine. It's cool! The drywallers are supposed to be here today. They are not. Patience is a virtue...

I went to the Middle School to help out with the honor roll celebration. They got moon bounces, a snowcone machine and all kinds of goodies for the kids. The kids had a great time! They had pingpong, board games, candy, soda, yearbooks to sign.. it was a middle schooler's heaven!
I was helping put the pingpong tables away. One kid decided to give the table a push (I'm sure he thought he was being helpful) and it fell over. As it went over it took my arm with it. My wrist and my arm look like I've been in a fight. A real nasty black and blue. Another lady ran over and tried to help me push the table back upright. We were struggling with it - if we didn't win, we'd have been crushed - and one kid came over and attempted to try to sorta help. (#1 Son is a great helper and I'm used to kids who just jump in and know what to do to help. I'd say I'm spoiled in that regard.) Basically the kid was useless, but he stopped the wheels from turning and we got the thing upright. I ran for ice. I'd take a picture, but the digital camera is in the Great White North with Mr. Bug. Even the principal was grossed out. It's really pretty. :-)

Need a laugh? My Auntie S. sent me this:
A guy gets on a plane and finds himself seated next to a cute blonde.
He immediately turns to her and makes his move. "You know," he says, "I've heard that flights will go quicker if you strike up a conversation with your fellow passenger. So let's talk."

The blonde, who had just opened her book, closes it slowly and says to the guy, "What would you like to discuss?"
"Oh, I don't know," says the guy, "How about nuclear power?"
"OK," says the blonde. "That could be an interesting topic. But let me ask you a question first. A horse, a cow, and a deer all eat the same stuff--grass. Yet the deer excretes little pellets, the cow turns out a flat patty, and the horse produces muffins of dried poop. Why do you suppose that is?"

The guy is dumbfounded. Finally he replies, "I haven't the slightest idea."
"So tell me," says the blonde, "How is it that you feel qualified to discuss nuclear power when you don't know sh*t?

I just love stuff like this!!

If you participate, leave the link to your Thirteen in others comments. It’s easy, and fun! Be sure to update your Thirteen with links that are left for you, as well! I will link to everyone who participates and leaves a link to their 13 things. Trackbacks, pings, comment links accepted!
