Santa Award
Renee, gave me the "Spirit of Christmas" Award. I am absolutely honored.
I love Christmas! I've seen the Big Guy. I believe in Santa!!
Christmas is my favorite holiday and time of year. I love the music. I love to decorate my house. I love to shop for the perfect presents. I even love to wrap them up - providing I have all my supplies and and plenty of time. But most of all I love to give presents. Today, I get to give this award away to five special bloggers.
According to Santa, "The award is given to those who care about others. Those who have a kind word to say or a broad shoulder to lean on in the times that others need that. Those who display the "Spirit of Christmas".
I would like to give this award to these very special people: Nicole, Clearly, Kimberly, Susan, and Jane. Congratulations to you all, and may the spirit of the upcoming season fill your lives with joy.
Santa has asked that you pick up the code and instructions here at this post: Santa Claus The Spirit Of Christmas

Identity Theft
I can't stand people who steal lunch money.
I really can't stand people who steal my lunch money.
A tough girl tried to steal my lunch money on my first day in 7th grade, but Lucy Iocco told her to leave me alone. Lucy, who I didn't even know before that moment, has always had a very special place in my heart.
I need Lucy back!
#1 is in high school. He brings his lunch 4 days and buys on Friday. I fill his account with my credit card through Lunch Money dot com. The kids purchase their lunch by typing in their student ID numbers into this computer thingy and the money is deducted from their accounts.
That sounds lovely until someone uses $100+ of my money to purchase breakfast and 3 lunches a day for 10 days. That someone wasn't my #1. My #1 eats his lunch - that he brought from home - real quick and goes to the library. He also has lunch during 4th lunch, not first lunch. Some little thug was using his number during 1st lunch and again at the end of 4th lunch. Why wasn't said thug in class?
This Wednesday was #1's birthday. He asked to buy lunch that day and I let him. They asked for his ID. How do I know this? He mentioned it when he got in the car that afternoon. They have never asked for his ID before.
It seems they may have suddenly realized that his number was being used more than once on Wednesday. Hmmm.. aren't they supposed to show ID every time they make a purchase?? Where were they the other 10 days??
I caught the charge to my account on Wednesday night when another $50 charge popped up. He hadn't even purchased 2 lunches yet!! I called School Nutrition on Thursday. They put a flag on the account to ask for ID. Gee.. Thanks, but it's a little late now, don't cha think?
School Nutrition sent me a copy of all the charges on the account. The first 3 weeks of school were correct. Lunch on Fridays. The paper shows that I filled the account in October and BOOM! All heck broke loose. Some kid was mighty hungry... This kid was eating a huge breakfast every morning. And then 3 lunches every day with extra desserts and fries.
We have spoken with #1. He has no idea who might have his number. But, he has decided to bring his lunch until it is all squared away. As of yesterday, there have been no more charges.
I am hoping to get my money back. I'll let you know how it goes. But, right now, I'm not happy.

Thursday 13
1 Yesterday, #1 turned 15! OMG! Where DOES the time go? 2 LLB is only one point ahead of Kay in the race for Band Student of the Year. LLB is ahead because she plays well. Kay is only one point behind because of her extra credit attendance at music events. Grrrrr.... 3 That said, LLB will be attending the Homecoming game and 1/2 time show tomorrow night for a few extra credit points. She will also be attending the competition at Annapolis next week. 4 LLB gave up a birthday party - her choice - to attend the Homecoming game tomorrow. 5 This award means a lot to her. She wants it BAD!!! 6 #1 has decided to go out for swim team this fall. That starts right after Marching Season is over. 7 He will practice every day right after school, but will be done at 4. He will be home an hour and a half earlier than he is now. What is he going to do with all of his free time?? 8 LLB is taking her Arban's Method for Trumpet to school today. She has a duet in there that she wants to play for the Winter Concert. She is so cute! She wants to ask the band teacher to play it with her. 9 LLB is really doing well with her trumpet. She was practicing last night and #1 said, "Wow! She's really good. Her sound is soo clear! She's better than the trumpet line at the high school." 10 It's so nice to hear that he appreciates her efforts. I just wish he'd practice like she does. He's an awesome sax player, but there is always room for improvement... 11 I have a dentist appointment today. 12 Mr. has to give blood today. He has a special kind of blood and was asked to give for a specific patient in PA. Isn't that cool? I think it's neat that you can save someone's life with less than an hour of sitting still. He's more than happy to do it. 13 Another busy week is coming to a close... I'm ready to sit back and relax this weekend. We have one party to attend - Clearly's Birthday Party. Go give her some love on Saturday, k? Links to other Thursday Thirteens! |

Marriage Me Me
I've had this wedding meme set aside for quite some time. I could wait for our anniversary, but I just know I'll forget to post it. So - here it is:
1. Where/how did you meet? At a softball game. He was on the bench waiting for his turn and I came to watch the guys in my office.
2. How long have you known each other? We met in May of 1987
3. How long after you met did you start dating? 6 months or so. My office mates weren't thrilled when we started dating as they believed it was like Snow White meets Darth Vader. Alas, they knew not of what they spoke.
4. How long did you date before you were engaged? Just over a year. We got engaged at Christmas. My ring was in the toe of my stocking.
5. How long was your engagement? A year
6. How long have you been married? It will be 18 years in December
7. What is your anniversary? 12-9-1989
8. How many people came to your wedding reception? 80 Nice and small.
9. What kind of cake did you serve? Carrot with butter cream frosting
10. Where was your wedding? Wilmington Congregational Church for the ceremony and The Andover Inn for the reception
11. What did you serve for your meal? Lots and lots of hors D'euvres and a carving station
12. How many people were in your wedding party? My sister, my friend Jen, Mr.'s Dad and brothers
13. Are you still friends with them all? Yes
14. Did your spouse cry during the ceremony? Yes
15. Most special moment of your wedding day? I have a couple. It snowed just a few snowflakes as I walked into the church. I look at that as my blessing from above. Peeking into the church with my dad to see everyone. Watching Mr.'s face as I walked up the aisle.
16. Any funny moments? Mr.'s ring wouldn't go on his finger!! LOL!!
17. Any big disasters? Our organist backed out the day before. I called an old friend of the family and she bailed us out. I told her she could play whatever she wanted.
18. Where did you go on your honeymoon? Stowe, Vermont - the coldest week of the year. Too cold to ski.
19. How long were you gone? A week
20. If you were to do your wedding over, what would you change? Working heat in the condo at Stowe. The heat wasn't working - at all - and it was the coldest week they'd ever had up there. Yup - about Tuesday, I asked to go home to our nice warm house in MA. We got moved to a different condo with heat. :-)
21. What side of the bed do you sleep on? Left
22. What size is your bed? Queen
23. Greatest strength as a couple? Together we can do anything
24. Greatest challenge as a couple? Ummm... I dunno
25. Who literally pays the bills? Me.
26. What is your song? As time goes by
27. What did you dance your first dance to? As time goes by
28. Describe your wedding dress: Long sleeved, high neck, lots of lace, candlelight white, perfect length train long enough to look great - short enough to bustle up... simply gorgeous!
29. What kind of flowers did you have at your wedding? Creamy white roses and stephanotis with holly.
30. Are your wedding bands engraved? No. Mine cost exactly $22 at Service Merchandise. His cost $50 because it was a little wider. :-) Yes, we always were pretty cheap!
31. How old were you when you got married? I was 25. He was 36. I'd do it all over again. Actually we renewed our vows when we'd been married 10 years. We will probably renew at 20, too!

What is a Single Parent?
I have this acquaintance. I'll call her K.
Her divorce was final last December.
She was married to her high school sweetheart for 22 years or so.
She keeps whining about being a single parent. She has always been a single parent. Her ex never went to anything. He never took the children anywhere. She did it all.
I mentioned something one day about doing such and such or going on a trip with one of her two kids - you know, like to volunteer. She said she can't do that because she is a single parent. (She doesn't work outside the home, mind you.)
I was mulling that over when all of a sudden it hit me. Many of the married women I know and love have husbands who travel. They are single parents. I was one when my Mr. was traveling 3 weeks out of 4. I still did it all. I felt it was important for the children to still do all the things they enjoyed. It is hard work, but worth it. My dear friend R's husband travels often and she still manages to get the children to their activities. My other dear friend's husband used to be gone all week every week for work. While he was working across the country, she had to do it all - and she did. LLB's friend A's dad is often gone to Europe or Australia on long business trips. A's mom has 3 children and one of them is going to a school out of our county. She has to get him to his bus stop - 30 miles from here - by 6:30am. She manages. All the military families whose loved ones are off serving our country are single parents. They manage. Those of us with a back bone manage. We put one foot in front of the other and we get it done - one baby step at a time. We don't sit and sulk or whine. We just do it.
K had the nerve to say to me, "You have help." Huh? I don't have a maid. I don't have a housekeeper. I don't have a chauffeur. I am all those things. "Your Mr. helps you", she said. No - my Mr. is an involved parent. There is a huge difference. He does not help me. He parents our children. I've told her before, "Your ex is their father. If you need him to do something for/with the children, you have to tell him what you need. He is not a mind reader."
Communication is the key... alas, I don't think they communicated while they were married and they communicate even less now. It's certainly not a healthy situation for the children...
Mr. has spent the last few weekends being pit crew for #1's high school band. I took the running here at home. Why? Because he is stronger than I am. We do what we are good at. He is strong. He can carry heavy things. I know where LLB needs to be and how to get there. When the kids have home games, I take pictures and Mr. volunteers in the concession stand. Why? I'm better with a camera and he can sell ice to an eskimo. If I were a single parent, I'd be doing the same thing. I'd be volunteering in some capacity.
I sure wouldn't be sitting around whining that I didn't have help!

Ding Dong -- Ditz!
I had a handbell rehearsal last night. I'm just a ringer. I don't direct the choir.
The director moves me where she needs me the most. For one song, she has me play in the upper treble bell section. I don't mind. I'll play whatever she wants me to play. Just know that I prefer lower bells - like more toward or in the bass line.
The girl who plays the upper treble bells next to me has missed two out of the last 3 rehearsals. Yes, two. IN A ROW! If she were a super ringer who could read music, play four-in-hand, and had a super sense of rhythm that would be okay, because it happens. This girl has been ringing for 2 years and is totally clueless. She refuses to count.
(A little background: Mr. ran into her last Friday after she'd missed the second rehearsal. Mr. was furious. He told her that it wasn't fair to the rest of us that she missed rehearsal. He told her that if she couldn't make rehearsals that maybe she should quit. He has a point...)
She showed up last night. We started with the song in which she plays the melody line - a song that we were going to play in church LAST spring. It's not like she hadn't ever seen the music. She missed the first 10 measures... twice. I counted for her -- out loud. She just didn't even have a clue as to where we were. She was totally paralyzed. She just stood there with her bells up. UGH!!!! If I weren't so busy with my 4 and an extra 3 bells because one of our members was away, I would have played her 2...
The director was as patient as she could be - she's getting a free pass into heaven. If I were the director, I would have been tearing my hair out. I'd be bald by now!! By the time we finished the piece, I was furious. The director was furious. Fortunately for me, the rest of the time I play down towards the bass line. I went back to my spot and heaved a sigh. My friend rolled her eyes at me, welcomed me back, and made me laugh... Thank GOD!
The girl didn't get any better. We are playing next Sunday. She gets nervous and freezes... I can only imagine what that song is going to sound like with 1/2 the melody line missing. Trust me, that melody line will only be missing for a few measures, because I'll take her bells and play them - even if I have to pry them out of her fat little fist. I'm not going to let her ruin the piece for the rest of the choir that worked so hard.
FYI: We have a new person who started 4 weeks ago. She has never rung before -- ever. She doesn't read music. She is doing great! She rings beautifully! She counts. She tries. She takes her music home to learn it. She is dedicated and she cares. The choir sure does appreciate her.

Zeb goes to school
Zeb had to go to school today.
He was trained to come when called by LLB.
Zeb is not the best dog when it comes to coming, but he tries.
Zeb is easily distracted... It's kinda like being ADD... We call him "Distracto Dog".
We take him off the leash.
His brain shuts off. It's so immediate and obvious you can see it happen.
His eyes glaze over.
His nose sniffs the air...
Hmm... I smell a squirrel... where is he? pant pant...
"Zebbie, come here."
Huh? Oh.. wait a sec... I see a butterfly... Ohhh, look a bumblebee... Oohh I smell a deer.
"Zeb... Come here."
Coming... Oh... I hear another dog... Oooh I see a rabbit... What's that smell?
You get the picture, right?
Zebbie had to come when called in the classroom...
LLB took his leash off.
His brain shut off.
His nose lifted into the air... "Hmmm.... smells... yummy school smells.. Oh, wait. I smell dog cookie."
She called him. She showed him a cookie.
"Oooohh... there it is. Hey, this shoe smells like the cafeteria. This room has a slippery floor. What's that girl got?"
It took a few tries, but he did fine.
LLB got her A.
I took Distracto Dog home...

Friday Feast
Appetizer When was the last time you were surprised?
Every day I'm surprised by something... It can be the email left by a a good friend, the idiot who cuts me off in traffic, or even what is on the plate at dinner. It certainly doesn't take much to surprise me.
Soup Fill in the blanks:
My eyes are ____Blue____, but I wish they were __blue__. I like my blue eyes.
Salad If you were a Beanie Baby, what would you look like and what would your name be?
I'd be a ladybug of course!! Is there any other name? Ladybug
Main Course Name two things you consistently do that you consider to be healthy habits.
I stopped drinking soda. It's water or seltzer for me. (Sometimes I'll get soda if we are out to lunch.) I try to make it to Jazz 3 times a week.
Dessert What brand of toothpaste are you using these days? Do you like it? Why or why not?
I like Crest the best (always have...), but right now I'm finishing off a tube of Ultra Brite.

Thursday 13
1. #1 got his first high school report card this week and there was a big fat 4.0 on it! Yippee for #1! He works very hard and we are soo proud of him. (They get report cards every 4.5 weeks.) 2. There is another band competition this week. Mr. and #1 are going. It's in VA Beach. I wish I could go, too... 3. I have a board meeting for my handbell guild this weekend. I'm looking forward to seeing all those Ding Dongs again! One of my assignments was to read a book about boards... can you say boring!! Actually some of it was interesting, but... talk about dry reading!! 4. I need to bring some munchies and maybe a beverage or two with me since we are staying over night. I'm thinking that a bottle of Naked Mountain Chardonnay might be yummy. If you ever get a chance to try any of Naked Mountain's wines - do it! They are all terrific. I found some in a tiny grocery store near here... Yummm. 5. I have been to Jazzercise every day this week and I'm going again today. MommaK is going to be so proud of me. She's my instructor. She hurts me, but it's okay. 6. After Jazz, I'll be home. I'll be doing laundry and packing my suitcase. 7. Our kitten is a hellion! She torments the other cat. She teases the dog. She climbs my curtains. She tries to eat LLB's homework... 8. Zebbie is having quite a time with the kitten. Poppy teases him and then wonders why he chases her. Zeb is getting a lot of exercise!! 9. Poppy also finds her own tail fascinating. It is a very long tail for such a small kitten. She will catch sight of it out of the corner of her eye and pounce on it. She is always surprised when she bites it and it hurts! It's pretty funny! 10. Zebbie is off to school on Monday for one class period. LLB had to train him to come for her science class. (They are learning about behavior.) Too bad I can't train her to keep her room clean. 11. My handbell class went really well yesterday. I was down to 7 ringers, but the class dynamic was totally different with two of the 8th graders missing. Hmmm.... They had an excellent rehearsal, they all played well, they were attentive... Amazing how that happens... 12. My handbell class also has a lot of performances coming up. Three of them are near Christmas, so I can use a lot of the same music. Do you think the parents will mind hearing "Sing We Now of Christmas" and "Jolly old Saint Nicholas" at two of the performances?? (There won't be parents at the 3rd performance. Lucky me!) They can only learn so many tunes in a limited amount of time... 13. I've been so busy, I haven't had time to comment on a lot of your posts, but I am reading them when I have the time. If anyone can help me get Dixie's blog to load on my machine, I'd appreciate it. I can't get it to load and it freezes my computer. I love to read Dixie... I've tried netscape, firefox, and explorer to no avail... This happened a while ago with Yellow Rose, too. :-( Links to other Thursday Thirteens! |

What's with the morning rush??
Why is it that #1 waits until the last second to get his teeth brushed and face washed? The bus comes at 6:36. Sometimes she comes at 6:34. We NEED to leave the garage at 6:30 to catch that bloomin' bus...
This morning, I look at the clock - it says 6:34.
Where is #1?
He is in the bathroom. He is primping. (He says he was shaving, but I didn't hear the all too familiar buzz going...) We don't have time for this!
I yell at him to hurry - waking up LLB in the process. This irritates me...
He hops in the car and says, "Mom, it's 6:34. What's your problem?"
"#1, I can't take you to school. It's too far. I won't make it back for LLB."
"Mo-om, the bus comes at 6:36. We have plenty of time."
"Really? You think?"
Our neighbor, who has a daughter in 11th grade, was flying down the road just in front of us. He started to turn his car around at the bus stop (to head back towards home... we all do it) when the lights of the bus came up over the hill. I did a quick u-turn - using part of a lawn to do it. The neighbor did the same thing.
#1 said, "Umm... thanks Mom."
"No problem. Be ready tomorrow, now go!!!"
What time was it? 6:36am.
That child best be ready at 6:25 tomorrow morning or else...

Need a Vacation Spot?
My favorite city to visit is Boston. New York is just too big! Try Boston Tours for tix and stuff. Boston has the best seafood around! The history in Boston and surrounding towns is the ultimate - Boston is where our nation was born - the Tea Party, Paul Revere's house, Old North Church... Can you even beat this?? Old Ironsides is a sight to behold. You've gotta go see her. They have a cruise you can take - it's not cheap, but it might be worth the cash.
If and when you visit Boston, definitely take the Trolley Tour. The two day pass is definitely worth it. You get to see everything! You can get off at the sites you want to explore and get back on to go to the next spot when you are ready. You just cannot do the whole city in one day. If you are going to go to the Aquarium anyway, get the combination package. The aquarium is expensive and this will give you a little bit of a discount and get you a ride over there as well.
If you have time, do the sunset dinner dance cruise. Boston at night from the water is beautiful. I've done this dinner and dancing cruise many times and it is a blast! The harbor is pretty and clean, the lights of the city are just gorgeous at night. It's a really pretty city.
Now, if you like lobster, the lunchtime lobster cruise might be something fun. I happen to love lobster, but I've never done the lunchtime cruise. Don't want to waste valuable time cruising during the day? Try Legal Seafood - they have some of the freshest, most delicious seafood around. I'm probably not supposed to push a specific restaurant, but this one is phenomenal.
So, if you need a vacation spot - go to Boston, k?

Off to shopping to see if we can find Grambug a phone. None at Target, but we got some great deals on other stuff - 10 notebooks for 25 cents, curling ribbon for $1.38, tissue paper to match ribbon for $1.38. Quick dinner at Thai place - YUMMM!!. I got a rock!
I got a rock for my birthday.
I got a big shiny one!
Emerald cut...
It's absolutely stunning!
See:
Okay, so I can't wear it, but I love it!
Here's the whole story.
I like rocks.
Big rocks.
I saw this one on the side of the road earlier in the year. I wanted that rock. It was too heavy for me to lift, to I asked Mr. and #1 to get it for me. They passed it every day for months. Yesterday, they stopped and got it for me. I'm one lucky girl!!
I'm going to paint something on it and put it near my front steps. I'll show you when I get it done. It might take a while so don't hold your breath!!

It's All About Me...
Well, it should be. It's my birthday!
CQ gave me this Nice Award:
Now I'd like to share with a few of you - and since it's my day, I can do whatever I want (well, except skip the vestry meeting I'm supposed to attend tonight).
First, I'll share with MPJ of A Room of Mama's Own. She's a sweetie and she wants to be tagged - silly girl!!
I think I'll also share with Clearly. I adore Clearly. She's fun and her family is nuttier than mine!!! Besides, She doesn't have anything better to do than go to that silly vestry meeting with me tonight. Now she can choose some other nice bloggers to tag.
Renee is a sweetie, too. She comments almost every day and makes me smile!
Dixie should get this award even though she's got so much going on her page that it freezes my computer. I haven't been able to read her posts in their entirety since school started - she's gotta quit addin' all them pictures. Bummer for me...
Believe it or not,Nicole deserves this award, too. (And I'm not just saying that because she's my sister.) She's funny and sweet, and wicked nice. Heck, so is her new car -- now THAT is one sweet ride. Do stop by give her some comment love!
So - have a nice day and eat a cupcake for me, k?
