Silly Dog

Zeb forgets that his legs are short and that he is - in effect - a small dog.
In his mind, he is a grehound/doberman/shepherd cross...
In reality, he is a corgi - a small corgi.
Zeb is a pretty fast runner and an excellent herder.
In his mind he is faster Secretariat.
In reality, he's not that fast.
Zeb is not fast enough to catch a deer.
You think he would have figured that out by now...
Today he chased one across the yard and into the woods.
He returned 20 minutes later -- sans deer.
Maybe it's the chase he likes.
Maybe it's the exercise -- nah -- he is currently curled up, happily snoring in his crate.
He's probably dreaming about catching that deer.

Zeb - the wonder dog!

LLB took this picture, too!

I took these - much to Zeb's dismay:

His expression says, "Mom... I don't like you to take my picture with that thing. It's scary!"

He is so brave.... NOT! He doesn't like the camera, so he ran in here:

See - so brave he'll actually peek at the camera:

His favorite hiding place - behind the toilet... Silly dog!

Zebbie's New Scent

Zebbie is into scents... all kinds...
He sniffs everything - and I mean everything from rugs, to shoes, to plants, to mailboxes, to rocks, to blades of grass. You name it he sniffs it.
If he finds something he'd like to try out - like you and I do at the perfume counter at Macy's - instead of asking for a squirt of the scent on a card or a quick spritz on the wrist, he rolls in it.
Yesterday I was trying to get out of here in time to make it to Richmond for noon. Sounds simple enough... get the kids off to school, pack an overnight bag, get Mr. out the door for 9, pick up the kitchen and swap the wash on the way out the door.
It wasn't that simple.
Zeb requested to be let out at 9. At 9:25am he returned.
He stunk! And I'm not talking about eau de cologne spray here... I'm talking about Eau de Bear Sheet. Eau de Bear Sheet has an indescribable scent... kinda like a septic tank. He had bear sheet everywhere to go along with the smell. I assume he really loved this new scent. He had bear sheet under his chin and along his neck - yes, I know that's where most people put their cologne... But this was chunky and brown and yucky!
Can I tell you how disgusting it was to wipe off said bear sheet? It was so disgusting that I threw him in the tub and gave him a bath. He was not impressed with his bath at all, but I didn't much care. I could not have him rubbing that crap all over my house while I was gone!
After his bath, he tried to rub off the scent of Suave shampoo on his towel.. It didn't work. He still smells great. And his hair is shiny, too!
Eau de Bear Sheet is definitely off the list.

Zebbie's Christmas Adventure

Most of you know that Zebbie spent his Christmas vacation in West Virginia with friends of ours. K picked him up on Monday evening and chauffeured him back to WV in style.

When he arrived at The Farm, K unpacked the car and brought Zeb in. Zeb looked around and took it all in. 9 cats... cool... 2 other dogs... no big deal... He watched B unpack his stuff and set up his bed. Then he promptly went in and relaxed. You know... the drive is long and lying down in the back seat is tough.

Now, I'm not a crazy dog owner, but it was Christmas and I wanted Zeb to have a good one. I sent a letter detailing his eating and sleeping habits. I sent packages of cookies and treats - all labeled as to when he gets them and that they should be shared with the other dogs in the family. I sent his bowls. I even sent his food in the rolling container I keep in my pantry - heaven forbid the boy should starve!

B and K got the biggest bang out of his froo froo bowls. He has the Southern Living set that I got for free for having a party. (Yes, that was the reason I had the party, but at least I didn't pay $50 for them, right?) So NOW she thinks - okay - knows that I'm a crazy dog person. Her comment to me that night on the phone was, "If I ever get to come back as a dog, I want to be a dog in your house! That dog has better stuff than we do!"

Zebbie won their hearts in a matter of moments. He slept in his crate exactly twice the whole time he was there. The rest of the time he was either on the couch curled up with them or in their bed curled up with them. That is what you call a spoiled rotten dog. B told me that she wasn't sure if he'd ever go back to sleeping in his create. (Trust me... he is back in his bed at night.)

Zebbie spent his days with B visiting the horses, walking the farm, or asleep on her couch. It's a tough life! (According to B, he did miss us. Every time a car went down the road, he stopped to look.) Zeb loves to walk and she walked him everywhere. You would have thought the old boy would have lost a pound or two, but all those treats I sent didn't help that situation.

He did show his quirky side... B was busy in the house and turned to find him missing. She searched high and low and found him curled up around their toilet. It's a good thing I told her that he does that... The next time he turned up missing she found him in her bed curled up under the covers. Now, I consider THAT bad manners, but fortunately she didn't mind.

I'm kind of surprised Zeb actually came home. They loved him. K could be heard in the background of my phone conversations B saying, "You can't have him back! He needs to stay here! He's our dog now!" After I hung up with B the day before everyone was due to arrive home, I told my family that I wouldn't be surprised to get home to find no dog and a ransom note on my counter with a list of demands.

Zeb had a wonderful vacation. He is looking forward the next time he can visit at B and K's. I'm not sure if we'll get him back next time, though...

Zeb's Vacation

Zebbie is getting ready to leave for his Christmas vacation destination - West Virginia. He will spend his time in the lap of luxury at my friend B's house. She is an animal lover to the extreme. He will spend his days running on the farm chasing Arabian horses or lounging by the fire surrounded by a myriad of cats and 2 senior dogs. Who could ask for more?

I chatted with her yesterday about Zebbie's likes and dislikes, his feeding and pooping schedule, his vet (which he will not need), and his bed/crate situation. She has a crate for him to use, but wanted to be sure that it was the right size. LOL! She's hysterical! He can sleep anywhere!

Needless to say, Zeb will be picked up this evening and chauffeured to his temporary digs. I will pack his bag today - his stocking - which I have filled, his food, his bowls, his bed, his stuffed animals, and his bones. Yes, the dog is spoiled... rotten.

But, I have a dilemma.
This friend, who is taking my dog for a week, will not allow me to pay her. She needs the money. She told me that if I paid her, she would never talk to me or take Zeb again. I can't have that!! So - any ideas?

Dinner Table Conversation

My friend J told me this story that happened at her dinner table on Thursday night. I find the whole thing hysterical...

It all started when I took Zeb with me to pick up LLB at ballet camp. Zeb needed his toenails trimmed and his appointment was shortly after ballet.

LLB took Zeb to see the ballet girls.
One of them asked if he was a girl or a boy.
"He is a boy"
"He can't be a boy. He doesn't have a whatzis."
"He had an accident. That's why he doesn't have a whatzis."
LLB proceeded to tell them the story of why the poor sweet dog doesn't have a whatzis.

That night at dinner, J's daughter and her friend were relating this same story to J and her husband P.
"Zebbie doesn't have a whatzis because it fell off when he was mating and the girl dog pulled away."
J was wondering if they really had any idea what all of that meant when her daughter leaned over to her dad, patted him on the back and said,
"Don't worry dad, that won't happen to you."

Wordless Wednesday

Zeb relaxes with the butterflies.
His favorite thing to do is lay on the deck and watch the butterflies in the lavender.

Eeeeek!

There is a chipmunk in my house!

Zeb found it under the couch - he is a very good dog (except for the fact that he found his way upstairs and is currently hiding under the bed - the big chicken!).

So much for having 2 cats!

I think one of the cats brought it in yesterday while we were gone. It seems that someone didn't close the door tight enough and it was open when Mr. walked in. Lets just say that I sure am glad that I wasn't the last one to let the dog or cats out...

I am trying to get this little rodent out of my house, but that is proving quite difficult. I found him. I scooped him toward the cat with the broom and the cat ignored him.

Great! Yeah... I know. I'm thrilled with my cat at the moment.

I found him under the piano, went to get something to plop over the little creature and he moved. I think he is under my file cabinet.

I need to go find him and try to dispose of him - OUTSIDE... where he belongs!

UPDATE:
We found him.
We caught him.
He is OUTSIDE where he belongs.

BTW: If you ever need to catch a chipmunk in your house, a colander and a thin cutting board are the tools you will find most useful.

A Zebbie Story

Zeb has a basket with his toys in it.

He doesn't play with his toys very often, but he does check out his basket every now and then to see if there might be a treat in there.

This morning, he checked out his basket and discovered that his thoughtless parents put the kitten's toys in there when they were cleaning up for the party on Saturday.

He leaned over his basket and his eyes widened.
"What is this? Kitty toys in my basket?"
He sighed.
He reached in, grabbed the noisiest kitty toy, and tossed it.
It rattled as it landed on the other side of the family room.
He turned and looked at me.
"Mom... I don't do kitty toys in my basket. I don't like kitty toys. They are loud. I don't like noisy toys and you know it."

I laughed.
I do know that he doesn't like noisy toys.

Zeb does not think I'm funny nor does he think he was funny.
He is currently watching the kitten chase butterflies and trying to ignore me.

But, he's not THAT mad... I see him sneak a peek every now and then.

Eau de toilette

Zeb is a little nuts.
He has to be to live here - that's a given.
Most dogs who have a comfy bed or a soft and snuggly couch would hang there.
Not my dog.

Lately his new thing is to hang out in the downstairs bathroom - curled up next to the toilet.

At first I thought he was too hot, but the fire is off and he's still hanging out in there... Then I thought it was the hum of the washer and dryer, but that hasn't been going for a couple of days (yes, I know... I'm behind with the laundry again). Then I thought it was because there is too much activity around here, but with only me home, that certainly isn't the case.

So - basically, the dog is anal. Either that or the little rug by the "john" is soft and comfy.

Some members of my family find it difficult to do their business with the dog curled up around the commode. Personally, I'm used to "having company" (as any mom can attest). It really doesn't phase me and LLB doesn't particularly care either.

The boys in my house... now that's another story. They care. They care A LOT! I think it might be because they are looking down upon our sweet canine and are afraid they will bump, drip on, or ruin his olfactory system for life. The comments coming from the from the WC are pretty hysterical:
"Zeb, can you move?"
"Oh, Zebbie.. I'm sorry... I didn't mean to bump you in the snout with my foot."
"Hey... what are you looking at?!"
"Zeb, oh... is it too stinky in here for you... Oh geez... you just pushed the door closed. Now you're stuck. Oh... don't look at me like that... okay, give me a second and I'll let you out."

So... does your dog hang out in the WC when he doesn't have to?

Happy Easter!

At 9pm last night, we finished our eggs. The kids did a great job - as always. And yes, they are teenagers, but they still like to color eggs.
It seems the bunny still stops here. Fortunately, he dropped of a toothbrush for each of them along with their loot.
Zebbie also got a treat - thanks to Nicole. He got all natural dog cookies from Callie's in Colorado. They are his all time favorite treats. He saw the bag come out of the box, he gave a little slurp of the tongue, and his butt instantly connected with the floor. "Look, Mom... I'm sitting. Can I have one? Huh? Huh?

The kids want to go find their eggs...
I best get going.
Happy Easter everyone!

Friday, March 21, 2008

Finally... it's Friday...

The children don't have school.
They can sleep. They can rest.
And I don't have to drive anywhere.
I think they may have to color some eggs today.

Miss Piggy has adjusted to being back here for the week. Yesterday, she spent the day on LLB's lap being petted and loved. Zeb spent most of that time trying to lick her. She was getting a bit slimy, so we took pity on the poor thing and put her in her house. This morning she's a happy camper - chirping, jumping, and hay munching are her activities of choice.

Zeb and Angel just had a mini domestic disturbance. It seems that Angel is the alpha animal in the house. (I had no idea she wields so much power!) Zeb was going to chase the mini kitty, and Angel decided that she had had enough of his shenanigans... She hissed. He stopped dead in his tracks and barked. She hissed and growled and then let him have it with a series of mews and noises. He sighed and laid down on the floor looking totally dejected. I'd love to know what she said! Now he's sulking in the corner... It's quite pitiful...

The other day, when it was warm out, Mr. decided that we would clean the gutters on our house. Just so you know, Mr. doesn't do heights. I am the one who climbs ladders around here. We got the ladder out - it is one of those really long ones. We stretched it out and leaned it against the first section of gutter. I went up. I cleaned out the section. I came down. I must have repeated this about 20 million times or so. Gram doesn't do heights either. As I went past one of her windows, I looked in. She was totally wigging out! She sent Grandpa out to tell me that next time we need to clean the gutters, we are hiring someone. LOL! Mr. said that every time I started up the ladder...

The next day, I went to hop out of bed and my posterior revolted! Now, I do a lot of standing, a lot of stair running, and a lot of walking. People in my Jazzercise class tell me I have an awesome rear end, so I was thinkin' it was pretty toned up. Obviously, I was mistaken. Later that day, I started feeling it in my obliques and my abs. Walking and anything between a sit and a stand was difficult at best. It is now 3 days post ladder climbing. I can finally move without looking - and feeling - like I'm 90.

My tip for today is this: if you eat too much pie or too many deviled eggs this weekend, climb your ladders and clean your gutters. Your posterior - and your obliques - will thank you.

Wordy Wordless Wednesday

It's a toy mouse. Don't hyperventilate out there...

Mini Kitty - aka: Poppy - loves this thing. She carries it around. She bats it. She pounces on it. She attempts to drown it - or give it a bath (your choice) - at least 2 times each and every day. It's not so bad that she tries to drown it, except that she always tries to kill it in Zebbie's water bowl.

The poor dog will NOT drink out of a bowl with a mouse in it - even if it is a toy. He's got scruples...

One of those days...

You know it's going to be one of those days/weeks when:
Your car rolls over 100k miles and the check engine light comes on.
And... Your dog turns limpy for no apparent reason - I'm sure he hurt himself because he was chasing the cat when no one was home or watching.
And... Your sweet LLB wakes up talking around her tonsils.

So... Mr. is taking the car in.
I'm taking LLB in.
Zeb - he's on the back burner - he is much better after a day of rest. He will be even better after another day of rest.

So much for my exercise class...

Naughty Dog!

Zebbie is in the dog house.

He peed on the rug in the master bedroom yesterday.

We were all home. We were all available to take him outside. We were all downstairs in the kitchen and family room... all of us... all 4 of us. He did not come down and ask to go out. He did not come down and sit by the door. He did not bark. He just peed.

Believe me, it's not the rug... it's the fact that he peed. The rug is 20 years old. It was probably installed when the house was built. It is horrendous! I hate it. I want to replace it with hardwood flooring. (Unfortunately, the 22 new windows we NEED takes precedence over the flooring I want right now...)

His domain has shrunk considerably. He has access to the kitchen and the family room - that's it!

We sent him outside while we went up to the attic to retrieve the baby gates. When he came in and found that he could not go upstairs, or in the living room, or in the dining room, he hung his head. He should! He should hang his head in shame! He PEED on my rug!!

Bang!

It's getting to be hunting season around here. People are shooting at things, so we hear guns go off a lot. A bang here... a bang there...

Zebbie and Mr. were out walking the other day. Mr. noticed that poor Zeb was having trouble pooping. Zeb strained and pushed to no avail. A gunshot went off. That bang scared the poop right out of the dog. Poor Zeb shot that poop straight out of his butt.

Poor Zeb got scared sh*tless!!!

Zeb goes to school

Zeb had to go to school today.
He was trained to come when called by LLB.

Zeb is not the best dog when it comes to coming, but he tries.
Zeb is easily distracted... It's kinda like being ADD... We call him "Distracto Dog".
We take him off the leash.
His brain shuts off. It's so immediate and obvious you can see it happen.
His eyes glaze over.
His nose sniffs the air...
Hmm... I smell a squirrel... where is he? pant pant...

"Zebbie, come here."
Huh? Oh.. wait a sec... I see a butterfly... Ohhh, look a bumblebee... Oohh I smell a deer.
"Zeb... Come here."
Coming... Oh... I hear another dog... Oooh I see a rabbit... What's that smell?

You get the picture, right?

Zebbie had to come when called in the classroom...
LLB took his leash off.
His brain shut off.
His nose lifted into the air... "Hmmm.... smells... yummy school smells.. Oh, wait. I smell dog cookie."
She called him. She showed him a cookie.
"Oooohh... there it is. Hey, this shoe smells like the cafeteria. This room has a slippery floor. What's that girl got?"
It took a few tries, but he did fine.
LLB got her A.
I took Distracto Dog home...

Zebbie's Kitty

Our still nameless kitten and Zebbie have become the best of friends. He has absolutely adored her since she got home. He is sweet and gentle and oh so funny with her!

Zebbie spends his time sliming -- um I mean kissing -- her face. He just licks and licks and she loves it. The whole thing is just eeeww!! Need proof?

Tuesday Tidbits

Here's the update on Zebbie:
He probably has a stomach thing going on that is normally something they see in the summer months, but because it has been so warm, they are seeing it now. Great... He's probably had it in his system for a while and got stressed and set the whole mess off. Great...

That said, Zebbie is on a rice diet. He likes the rice. He does not like the pills he's supposed to take. He eats the treat and spits out the pill. It's quite an art form... We have to mash them and hide the powder in his food.

He was doing pretty well until 7:45 am this morning when I found a lovely little liquified poopy present in the dining room. Yes, I have a light colored rug. Yes, Ive been spraying and blotting like a madwoman. No, I am NOT HAPPY. All the doggy gates are going back up as I write this. He will have access only to the kitchen - the rest of the house is now off-limits.

Mr. Bug arrived home after a long long drive from the Great White North. He was tired, but happy to be home. The Creampuff ran great! The only problem he had was that the windshield wiper fluid froze solid while he was up there in -10 weather. His brothers helped him defrost and siphon out the "summer mix" and put in the "-40 winter mix" fluid.

I got into bed last night about 10:30 or so.
Mr. Bug was snoring like a chainsaw. I took out my sudoku puzzle and was filling in the numbers waiting for the noise to stop.
Mr. Bug turned and looked right at me.
He said, "What are you doing here?"
"I live here."
He sat straight up and said, "Are you sure?"
"Yes, dear. We're married."
He thought about that for a moment. "Oh. Okay."
"Go to sleep, dear."
The next thing I knew he was curled up and snoring again. He was one tired Bug! I giggled... I'm still giggling about it.
